I live in a small coastal town, and for most of my life, it’s felt like nothing really changes here. That’s why the announcement about a huge wind farm coming to our area hit everyone so hard. On paper, the project is a win for the environment and will create clean energy for thousands, even some jobs. But the ugly truth is that to build it, a handful of families—including one I’ve known since I was a kid—would be forced to sell their land and move. Our town council is supposed to vote on whether to let the project move forward. Most of my friends and neighbors are up in arms. There are signs everywhere, petitions, angry meetings in the church basement. I understand why: We’re a tight community, and losing these families feels like tearing out a piece of ourselves. At the same time, I believe in fighting climate change and know this project could help in ways bigger than just our town. When people started asking me to speak out at the council, I felt torn in two. My heart aches for the families who might lose their homes. But if we block the project, are we just saying 'not in my backyard' while others pay the price? If I support it, am I betraying people who trusted me all my life? What would YOU do?
