I’ve lived in my small town almost my whole life, and I’ve always loved the close sense of community here. A few weeks ago, I found out that a large solar farm company wants to build on land directly next to our neighborhood, a move that would mean several families—including my closest friend’s—would have to relocate. My community launched a strong opposition: there have been tense meetings, angry petitions, and even threats of legal action. The families at risk are terrified of losing their homes and the lives they’ve built. I understand their fear. But I can’t ignore the reality either—the solar project would bring enough clean energy to power thousands of homes, including ours, and provide dozens of new jobs. I’m deeply worried about climate change, and I want to be able to look my children in the eye when they ask what I did to help. Some of my neighbors are talking about sabotaging the project by spreading misinformation. My friend begged me to speak at the next council meeting against the farm. But I keep thinking about the big picture, too: if everyone blocks projects like this, what hope do we have for a cleaner future? If I speak out for renewables, I risk losing lifelong friends and becoming a social outcast here. If I join my neighbors, I’ll be betraying my beliefs and maybe even my children’s future. Or maybe I need to find a compromise. I lay awake at night, torn between wanting to protect my friends and wanting to do what’s right for the planet. What would YOU do?
