I live in a small town that’s been struggling for years—factories shutting down, young people leaving, a lot of boarded-up windows. Last month, a company announced plans for a huge solar farm here. They say it’ll bring jobs, new businesses, and clean energy. But there's a catch: to build it, the town wants to buy and demolish half the homes on my street, including those of several families who’ve been here for generations. Some of them are older folks who can barely afford to move, and others are renters who won’t get any of the money from the buyouts. My own house isn’t on the list, which almost makes it worse—I've got nothing directly at stake, but these people are my friends. I went to a community meeting and watched neighbors break down in tears, while others shouted about the future and opportunities for our kids. I felt frozen: if I support the solar farm, I’m helping the town survive and maybe even thrive again, but I’ll be turning my back on people I care about. If I stand with my neighbors and help block the project, we might protect our little community, but the town could miss its last real shot at renewal—and maybe stall a desperately needed green energy project. There’s a petition going around to stop the solar farm, and some of my friends keep asking if I’ll sign. I know if I do, I’ll hurt chances for a cleaner, more stable future, but if I don’t, I’m complicit in displacing families who’ve done nothing wrong. Every day I walk past those houses and I can hardly look anyone in the eye. What would YOU do?
