I’ve lived in my neighborhood for almost fifteen years, and I know my neighbors the way some people know family. Last month, the county announced that a huge solar power plant is going to be built on land that’s now home to about a dozen households, including some close friends of mine. I’m a passionate believer in renewable energy — I teach my kids about climate change and recycle religiously — but seeing the impact up close is throwing me for a loop. My local community group is mobilizing to fight the project. They call it 'greenwashing' and demand the company find a site that won’t uproot families. Their arguments hit home; I watched my neighbors burst into tears at the last meeting, terrified of losing their homes, roots, and schools. At the same time, I know our city desperately needs cleaner energy, and if we keep blocking projects, aren’t we also part of the problem? Some people say our neighborhood is just 'nimby,' but I can tell you these aren’t faceless statistics — these are kids who play at my house. Community leaders are asking me to sign their petition and speak out. Do I join them, risking delaying the transition to green power? Or do I support the project for the greater good, even if it means friends will have to move? Or is there a way to push for a better compromise? Every choice seems like a betrayal. What would YOU do?
