I work at a small manufacturing plant in my town—a good job with decent benefits, which isn't so easy to find around here. About a week ago, I accidentally overheard my boss arguing with our maintenance lead late at night, voices raised and angry. I couldn’t catch everything, but I heard my boss say, “If anyone talks about where that barrel went, they’re out on the street.” It didn’t take much digging to realize they’ve been dumping leftover chemicals in an empty lot outside of town instead of paying for proper disposal. I know this stuff is toxic—the kind that can seep into the groundwater. After thinking it over non-stop, I brought up my concerns with my boss, but he cornered me and made it clear I’d lose my job (and maybe get blacklisted) if I so much as breathed a word to anyone. I’m not some big hero. I’m a single mom, and this job is what’s keeping a roof over our heads. If I go to the authorities, I could lose everything. But I also keep picturing the creek where my daughter plays with her friends, not knowing what’s creeping in the dirt. I’m terrified of retaliation—my boss can be ruthless—and I’d be lying if I said I could easily find other work. I keep turning it over in my mind: protect my family, keep my head down, or risk it all for what’s right? The longer I wait, the sicker I feel, but I can’t see a path where no one gets hurt.
