Should I Support a Green Project That Displaces My Neighbors?

Category: environment • Theme: Community Wellbeing vs Environmental Progress

I’ve lived in this community for almost my entire life. It’s mostly working-class families like mine, where everyone knows each other and birthdays feel like block parties. A few months ago, we learned that a big green energy company wants to build a solar farm on the outskirts of town. It sounds great on paper—cheaper power, jobs, local investment, even some money promised for our schools. But there’s a catch: they’d need to buy out several houses, and some families would have to move. My closest friend since childhood would be among those forced to leave their home. At every community meeting, tension sizzles. Some people are excited for the future, saying this is our one shot to help fight climate change and attract new resources. Others, especially those losing their homes, feel betrayed and anxious. My friend confides in me nearly every night—she worries about her aging parents, her kids having to change schools, the fear of losing their history here. Still, I can’t ignore how badly we need renewable energy and new jobs, and I worry if we block this, we’ll be seen as standing in the way of progress. Now, a vote is coming up about whether to formally oppose or support the project. My friends expect me to stand with them, but I feel torn. Am I betraying my neighbors if I vote yes? Or am I betraying my values if I vote no? Is there even a middle ground that matters? I’m losing sleep, afraid of breaking trust, but also afraid of holding the community back. What would YOU do?
