I never thought I’d be in a position like this. For years, I’ve been passionate about fighting climate change, always signing petitions and showing up at rallies for greener energy. Now, my small town’s council is considering a big wind farm project that could generate clean power for thousands of homes. I was excited at first—until I learned that it would mean several families (some I’ve known since childhood) would have to sell their houses and move away. The project would offer them decent compensation, but moving is traumatic, and some of them are elderly or have kids settled in school. This project could make a real difference to our region’s carbon footprint, and I truly believe in renewable energy. But when I saw my friend’s mom in tears, terrified about leaving the place she’s lived her whole life, my heart broke. My neighbors have started a petition to stop the wind farm, asking me to sign and speak out with them. I feel so torn—do I stand with my community even if it means stalling climate action, or do I become the “traitor” and support the green energy project at my neighbors’ expense? This has been consuming me for weeks, and every conversation I have—at the grocery store, at school pickup, even at yoga—seems to be about this. I wish there was a perfect answer, but there isn’t.
