I’ve lived in my small coastal community my whole life. It’s the kind of place where neighbors greet each other by name, and the fishing docks are always busy. Recently, a large green energy company proposed building wind turbines just outside town—enough to power much of our state, which could be a real step forward for clean energy. But the construction would mean relocating several families, including some whose roots here go back generations. The company offered compensation, but most feel it doesn’t come close to replacing their homes or memories. The whole town is split: half see this as a chance to do our part for the planet and invigorate the local economy, but the other half feels betrayed, mourning the loss of families who’d have to uproot their lives for someone else’s vision of progress. I keep thinking about my own cousins, their house right in the project zone, and how devastated they look every time the proposal gets brought up. I worry about climate change, but I also can’t ignore the pain on the faces of people I’ve known since I was a child. Now the community council is voting soon, and everyone wants to know where I stand. If I support the project, I help the environment but possibly break apart families and friendships. If I oppose it, I preserve our community but maybe miss a crucial opportunity. I’m torn—and whatever I choose will have consequences I can’t take back. What would YOU do?
