I live in a small coastal town that’s been struggling for years—fishing jobs have disappeared, and young people keep moving away. When a big wind energy company announced plans to build a major offshore turbine farm nearby, I was excited. They promised investment, good jobs, and a more sustainable future for our area. But when the specific plans were released, it turned out the cable infrastructure and switching station would need to go right through the oldest neighborhood in town, forcing about thirty families to relocate. Some of these folks have lived there for generations—my childhood best friend’s family among them. The town is deeply split: younger residents and environmentalists want the project, but the directly affected families are devastated and furious. I was recently elected to our community board and now have a swing vote on whether to support the project or officially oppose it. I believe in a green future—we desperately need the jobs and the world needs clean energy. But I also know how unimaginably hard it is to lose your home. People I care about will suffer either way.
