I’m a member of my town’s community board, and we’re about to vote on a massive new solar farm project. On the surface, it seems like such a win—we’d generate enough clean energy to power practically the whole county, bring in new jobs, and even get funding for better roads. But here’s the part that keeps me up at night: the project is planned right where several low-income families, most of them immigrants, currently rent their mobile homes. The solar company says they’ll offer small relocation payments, but I know that money won’t be nearly enough to cover the skyrocketing rents in nearby towns. Many of these neighbors have nowhere else to go. I’ve spoken to some—one woman sobbed in our meeting, begging us not to authorize it. Yet I also see climate change wrecking our summers with heatwaves, and I believe green energy is essential. Still, I can’t shake the guilt that this solution means turning someone else’s life upside down. If I vote against the project, I risk stalling local climate action for years. If I approve it, I’ll be complicit in displacing families who already live on the edge. Our board is split, and my vote could be the tie-breaker. I feel trapped between my ideals and my conscience.
