I grew up in a tiny coastal village that most people have never heard of. My family has lived here for generations—my grandparents, my cousins, my little brother who still rides his bike to the old market. Now, our region is being eyed for a massive wind power project. The government promises it’ll provide green energy to thousands and create jobs, even new funding for our local school. But the turbines would be built right where our homes and gardens are now—several blocks of old families, including mine, would have to relocate. Last week at the town meeting, nearly everyone was angry and scared. Some want to fight the project outright, others are quietly excited for the promised investment if they can get fair compensation, and some feel torn. I understand the urgent need for clean energy and jobs in our region, especially with climate change threatening our way of life. But to get those benefits, we’d lose something irreplaceable: our ancestral land, community tradition, and the only home my parents have ever known. My friends and neighbors are looking to me for support—many want me to help lead the opposition, but I feel like betraying the planet if I do. At the same time, supporting the project makes me feel I’d be betraying my own people. I’ve lost sleep every night, thinking about which legacy matters more. What would YOU do?
