I’ve lived in my close-knit lakeside community since I was a kid. Last week, we learned that a large solar farm is planned for the big open field at the edge of town. At first, I was quietly excited—I believe in green energy, and my son keeps asking what we’re doing about climate change. But then I found out several families, including my childhood friend’s, will need to move because their rental homes are on the project land. The company promises compensation and new jobs, but some folks—especially our older residents—are angry and scared. There are rumors the jobs will mostly go to outsiders, and the few affordable rentals left will vanish. My community is meeting to organize a petition to block the project. They want me to join, because I’m well-liked and usually take a stand. At home, my husband is conflicted too: he worries about jobs, but is thrilled about the impact on our kids’ future. I can see both sides. If I back the petition, my neighbors keep their homes, but we miss a real opportunity for progress. If I support the solar farm, I’ll lose trust here—and be partly responsible for friends’ pain. Quietly doing nothing feels cowardly, but I honestly feel paralyzed. What would YOU do?
