Do I Cut Power During a Heatwave to Save One Life?

Category: ethics • Theme: Individual Survival vs Collective Wellbeing

I work as the building manager of a large apartment complex in a city that’s been sweltering in a record-breaking heatwave. Last night, I got a desperate call from the daughter of one of our elderly residents. Her mother relies on a complicated home ventilator—without constant, stable electricity, she could die within hours. The problem is, we’re already over our power allotment for the week, and the city is warning of rolling blackouts if usage spikes. I have an emergency generator, but it only has enough output to power the ventilator IF I cut air conditioning to almost fifty other apartments. Most tenants are vulnerable too: families with babies, elderly couples, sick people—many dependent on AC for comfort, maybe even survival. If I cut the power to their AC, I could save the woman’s life, but risk heat exhaustion, suffering, even hospitalization for the others. If I try to spread what little backup power I have, I may end up not saving anyone. I’ve spent the night agonizing, feeling like I’m being asked to play God with people’s lives and comfort. Do I act to save the person in the greatest immediate danger, or do I try to be as fair as possible, even if it means risking her life? I know that whatever I do, people will be angry, and someone will inevitably get hurt. What would YOU do?
