Do I Expose My Best Friend's Secret After a Hit-and-Run?

Category: ethics • Theme: Truth vs Protecting the Innocent

I don't even know how to start this. Last weekend, I witnessed a hit-and-run while walking my dog late at night. I recognized the car—it belongs to my closest friend. I know for a fact she wasn't driving that night; her husband had taken the car to pick up their teenage daughter from a party. The next day, my friend confided in me that her husband panicked after hitting a cyclist who suddenly swerved into the street. The cyclist was badly hurt, but I later learned they will thankfully recover. Her husband wants to confess, but he's the sole breadwinner, and if he goes to jail, my friend's entire family will unravel—her daughter is struggling with severe anxiety, and her younger son is disabled. They're barely making ends meet. My friend begged me not to say anything, at least until they figure out what to do. But I keep seeing posts online about the 'unknown driver' and the devastated cyclist's family begging for information. The guilt is eating me alive. I know what staying silent means for that family seeking justice, but the thought of destroying my friend's life feels unbearable. I haven't slept in days and can't even look anyone in the eye at work. No matter what choice I imagine, someone innocent suffers. What would YOU do?
