Last Friday evening, as I came home late from work, I watched a car speed around the corner and clip a cyclist crossing the intersection. The driver hesitated for a second, then took off before anyone else could react. The cyclist was injured, but not killed. While I was helping call an ambulance, I saw the license plate in my mind—a plate I recognized. It was my next-door neighbor’s car. When she returned home that night, she seemed shaken, but just went inside. I know her well. She’s a single mom raising two young boys, both under ten. I’ve watched her scramble to make ends meet, juggling work and parenting, and honestly, she’s one of the most caring people I know in this building. I haven’t told anyone what I saw. The police came around asking for witnesses, but I kept quiet. Every day since, I see her with her kids, acting as if nothing happened, but I don’t know if she’s suffering in silence or just trying to protect her family. The cyclist is still in the hospital, and I keep replaying the accident in my head. If I go to the police, her life could implode—she might lose custody, her job, everything.
