Do I Return the Wallet or Keep the Cash?

Category: ethics • Theme: Personal Survival vs Ethical Integrity

I was on my way home from work last week, exhausted after another double shift at a job that barely covers my rent. As I cut through the parking lot behind a fancy restaurant, I spotted a thick leather wallet on the ground. I opened it and my heart started pounding—inside was a wad of crisp bills, more cash than I’ve seen in one place in ages. There were also credit cards and a business card with a name I recognized from local news—a businessman who owns several properties in our city. Someone who, by all accounts, is ridiculously wealthy. Meanwhile, I’m scraping by, juggling debt, and skipping meals so my kid doesn’t have to. I immediately thought about how much this cash could change things for me—maybe finally fix my broken car, maybe just breathe a little without counting pennies. But then I imagined how it would feel if someone took what little I do have. I know technically the right thing is to return it all, but this guy probably won’t even notice the loss. I started rationalizing—he’s definitely insured, and it wouldn’t hurt him one bit. Then I wondered if I could just take the cash and drop the wallet off anonymously somewhere. Maybe that way, I help myself and he still gets everything else back. But then again, it’s still stealing, right? I’ve never taken what wasn’t mine before. My conscience is gnawing at me, but so is my hunger and anxiety about bills due next week. What would YOU do?
