I volunteer at a small cancer-support charity every weekend, mostly helping at fundraising events. One of the staffers, who’s also a long-time friend of mine, has really poured their life into the charity for years. Recently, by accident, I discovered that my friend has been exaggerating patient numbers and treatment successes in the charity’s promotional material to make the donations look like they’re doing more than they really are. The actual work is good, but the numbers are padded, and some of the before-and-after stories are more marketing than truth. I confronted my friend, and she just broke down and said, 'If we don’t make the charity look as great as possible, people stop caring. Patients lose out.' She made me promise not to tell anyone and argued that the funds raised genuinely help people who need it—and the charity’s survival could depend on appearances. I can’t stop thinking about it—if I report this, I could ruin my friend’s career and potentially cripple a group that really does some good. But letting it slide means donors are being misled, and maybe someone will find out anyway and it’ll all collapse. Every night, I worry: am I complicit by staying silent? Or am I making it worse if the truth gets out and donors lose trust in every group like ours? I feel sick and trapped. What would YOU do?
