I’m caught in a situation that’s eating away at me. A very close friend of mine recently decided to invest a big chunk of their savings into a new business opportunity. They told me all about it—super excited, saying they heard it’s a “sure thing” from a mutual acquaintance we both trust. As they explained their reasons, I realized immediately: the core piece of information convincing them (that a major investor had already signed on) is totally false. I actually know, for certain, that the supposed investor has backed out weeks ago—I heard it first-hand at another gathering. But I learned it in confidence, and I wasn’t even supposed to know. If I directly tell my friend, I risk betraying that trust and getting multiple people upset with me. If I stay quiet, my friend could lose so much. And to complicate things, my friend is already stressed and desperate for a win after a tough year. I keep replaying it in my head, wondering if it’s my place to interfere.
