I live in an apartment complex where everyone pretty much keeps to themselves, but we all share a WhatsApp group to handle building concerns. A month ago, a new neighbor moved in below me. He’s loud, plays music deep into the night, and sometimes yells at the phone. Most residents vent about him daily—some can’t sleep, one mom says her kids have started struggling at school from exhaustion. Last week, late at night, I overheard him sobbing loud enough that I almost called for help. The next day, I found him sitting in the stairwell with a bottle, looking really unwell. I tried to talk, but he just waved me off. Yesterday, he fell asleep outside his door. The other residents are organizing to file a formal complaint and possibly get him evicted, hoping to restore everyone’s peace. But I have this feeling he’s barely hanging on—a mutual acquaintance told me his partner died recently and he’s lost his job. If we push him out, I worry we might tip him over the edge, maybe literally. I’m torn between joining the complaint to support my neighbors, staying out of it, or trying to intervene for him, risking my own reputation and privacy. What would YOU do?
