I’ve volunteered with a well-known local charity for years, and it honestly became a big part of my identity. We fundraise, we run workshops, and we help people in tough situations. The team feels like a second family to me, and seeing our work make a tangible difference has been a source of pride. But a few weeks ago, I stumbled across financial records while helping organize files for an event. I realized the director had moved large amounts of donor money into accounts linked to her personal business. There were odd receipts for lavish dinners, and vague explanations for missing funds. I can’t stop thinking about it. On one hand, I feel sick that money people gave to help others is being misused. But on the other, I’m scared exposing this will destroy everything—our reputation, the programs we’ve built, and the relationships I cherish with fellow volunteers. I also worry about all the clients we serve; if the charity gets shut down, they might have nowhere else to turn. The director has always been kind to me, and I wonder if the ‘misuse’ has some explanation I don’t know about. But what if it doesn’t?
