I was heading home from my second shift at work, exhausted and honestly running on fumes, when I spotted a wallet on the sidewalk by the expensive cafe near my bus stop. I picked it up and, when I looked inside, I found a huge amount of cash—definitely more than I make in a month. The ID in the wallet showed the owner lives in one of those luxury condos downtown, and there were platinum credit cards tucked in, plus a business card for a private investment firm. It was obvious this person was incredibly wealthy. Meanwhile, I’ve been stressing for weeks about rent and overdue bills. I hesitated. Returning the wallet intact would be the “right” thing to do—something I was always taught growing up. But part of me kept thinking: would this rich stranger even notice if a chunk of cash was gone? Do they deserve it more than I do? If I kept the money, I could finally breathe for a bit, maybe pay down my debt or even buy groceries without checking my balance. But I’d have to live with the guilt, and what if the owner depends on cash for something important, even if they seem wealthy? I even considered just dropping off the wallet at the police station anonymously, but part of me wonders if anyone would actually appreciate it.
