I was heading home from my night shift when I spotted a leather wallet lying on the sidewalk near a pricey downtown restaurant. I assumed it’d be empty, but inside there was a thick wad of bills—several hundred dollars at least—and a platinum credit card. The driver’s license showed a familiar name: the owner is a local real estate developer, regularly featured in the business section and clearly well-off. For me, money’s always tight. I’m covering my mom’s medical bills and juggling rent with part-time jobs, so finding that much cash felt surreal—almost like fate. My mind raced. Part of me instantly thought about groceries, overdue bills, and the freedom a bit of extra cash could bring. But another part of me felt a sinking guilt. I imagined the guy barely noticing the loss, or maybe just canceling his cards and moving on without a second thought. Still, it isn’t mine, and I was raised to believe what you find should be returned, no matter who lost it. I even took a photo of his driver’s license to prove I’d found it, but I haven’t reached out yet. I worry about leaving my name—what if he assumes I took some money? At the same time, if I keep the cash, I’ll probably get through this month without dread, but can I really live with myself after? I’ve asked myself a hundred times what’s fair. Does his wealth—or my hardship—change what’s right? What would YOU do?
