I Saw My Boss's Husband Hit a Cyclist—Should I Speak Up?

Category: ethics • Theme: Justice vs Compassion

I never thought walking home from work would put me in this position. Last week, I saw a white SUV roll through a stop sign and hit a cyclist. It was dark, raining, and the cyclist went down hard—but the SUV sped off before anyone else noticed. Most shockingly, I recognized the car: it's my boss's husband’s. They have a custom bumper sticker I’ve seen parked in the office lot for years, and he was definitely driving. The cyclist was injured but survived. Since it all happened just outside a quiet park, only a couple of us were there to see it. Now the local news is talking about a police search for the hit-and-run driver, and my boss has been acting normal as ever. She has three kids, and I know they recently went through a rough patch after a family illness. If I went to the police with what I know, her husband could go to jail and their lives would be upended—but the cyclist, who could’ve been killed, deserves justice too. I keep replaying the moment, imagining if it was my brother or best friend on that bike. I feel sick with guilt and fear. My boss has been nothing but kind to me—she even wrote glowing references that helped me keep my job during a layoff scare. But if I stay silent, am I enabling something unforgivable? Every day, it gets harder to act like nothing happened, but I know whichever way I go, someone’s life could be destroyed. What would YOU do?
