I never thought I’d be in this position. Last week, I was walking home when I heard screeching tires on a residential road. I saw a car clip a cyclist before speeding away. I ran to help, and thank goodness the cyclist survived, though with a broken leg and lots of bruises. Later that night, scrolling social media, I recognized the car in a friend’s family photo—her son had just gotten his license. My stomach dropped when I realized it was him behind the wheel. I keep replaying the image in my head, and I’m positive it was their car, and him, that hit the cyclist and drove off. I’ve known my friend since college. She’s a single mom holding her family together after her husband left. Her son has struggled but seemed to be turning a corner—finally doing better in school and getting his first real taste of responsibility. If I report what I saw, it could mean legal trouble for him and would devastate their already fragile family. But the cyclist deserves justice. Their medical bills must be huge, and they’re afraid to get back on a bike. The police appeal for witnesses sits unread in my inbox every morning, gnawing at my conscience. Every time I see my friend or her son, I feel like I’m hiding something terrible. I can’t sleep and I’m terrified of blowing up lives—yet also horrified at the thought of doing nothing. If I stay quiet, am I just as guilty? If I speak up, do I ruin innocent lives? I’m completely torn. What would YOU do?
