I never thought something like this would happen to me, but a few weeks ago, I woke up to find a large sum of money in my bank account—more than two thousand dollars. There was no explanation, just a deposit from an unfamiliar business name. I was behind on rent, facing bills from my son’s dentist, and honestly, I just felt so relieved. I told myself maybe it was a forgotten refund or a bonus from freelance work, even if deep down I knew that wasn’t true. I transferred out the money, paid off the most urgent stuff, and started sleeping easier at night. Yesterday, I got a call from my bank. They explained the money was sent to me in error—it was supposed to go to someone with a similar account number. They asked if I could authorize a withdrawal for the amount to return it. I felt physically sick. I’ve already spent nearly all of it. Now I’m panicking. If I tell them the truth, I’ll probably have to pay back money I no longer have, and my family will be in real trouble. But every time I look at my kid, I feel guilty for lying by omission. Part of me wonders if I’m blowing this out of proportion—that it’s the bank’s mistake, not mine, and maybe I should just keep quiet and let it go. But then I imagine how I’d feel if it were my own funds missing because of someone else's error. I really don’t know what to do. The money genuinely helped me through a tough time, but I can’t shake this feeling of responsibility. What would YOU do?
