I just found out that my closest friend is about to invest a huge chunk of his savings into what he thinks is a sure-fire real estate deal. He’s always struggled financially, so I know how much this means to him. But earlier today, by pure coincidence, I overheard two people at a café talking about the same project, and apparently, there are major legal issues with it—zoning violations, lawsuits, the works. My friend doesn’t know any of this. He’s so excited, showing me spreadsheets and mortgage plans, trusting me with every detail. Part of me wants to warn him immediately, but another part freezes. He’s incredibly stubborn; last time I tried to question his big idea, he blew up at me and didn’t talk to me for months. I’m afraid if I undermine him now, it’ll destroy whatever trust we rebuilt. But if I don’t say anything and he loses everything—how could I live with myself? Could I really let him walk into this disaster just to keep the peace? I keep replaying our conversations, wondering if there’s any way to approach it without sounding like I think he’s an idiot. This is one of the few things he’s truly hopeful about. I’ve never seen him this energized about his future. I feel trapped: either risk my friendship by telling him the harsh truth, or let him risk his entire future on a lie. What would YOU do?
