I’m caught in a situation that’s eating me up inside. My closest friend has always dreamed of opening her own bakery, and recently she was thrilled to tell me she qualified for a big, exclusive small business grant. She’s been turning her whole life upside down—quitting her reliable job, breaking her lease, taking out a loan—because she thinks the grant money is guaranteed. But I happen to know from a mutual acquaintance who sits on the grant committee that there’s been a misunderstanding: she isn’t actually on the final list at all. Nobody’s told her directly, but it’s basically decided already. If I step in and tell her, I’d have to admit that I found out through a source who probably shouldn’t have shared that information. Worse, I’m terrified she’ll see it as meddling or even lose faith in herself, since I’d be crushing her hope when there’s still a tiny chance she could get it.
