I never imagined a day at work could put me in this position. My office is notorious for over-air conditioning in summer—most of us shiver at our desks, wrapped in sweaters despite triple-digit heat outside. Today, I noticed one of my teammates, who’s been quietly battling a chronic illness, starting to look worse: freezing, shaking, and barely able to type. She texted me privately, admitting she was struggling to breathe and begged me to ask the facilities manager to raise the heat, even just for the floor in our section. The problem is, many colleagues have already complained that the AC is the only thing making the unbearable humidity manageable. I’m torn—if I push hard enough, I could likely get the temperature turned up and save her from getting seriously ill or even hospitalized. But that will ignite conflict with most of the floor, who’d be miserable and furious at the sudden heatwave.
