I teach a summer program in an old school building, and this week our city was hit with an intense heatwave. Our classroom’s air conditioning is ancient but powerful—it’s the only thing keeping the room bearable for 30 energetic ten-year-olds during long afternoons. On Tuesday, one student, who has severe asthma and other health complications, started having trouble. Even with medications and sitting away from the vent, she wheezed and started to panic. I called the nurse, and she said the AC was probably circulating more dust than usual because of how old and dirty the system is. She quietly suggested I recommend to maintenance that they shut down the AC for deep cleaning and servicing. The problem: if I do that, our classroom (with south-facing windows) could easily rise above 90°F, and most of my students already struggle to pay attention as it is. I know how parents depend on these lessons running smoothly while they’re at work, and I’ve seen how unbearable the room gets with no AC. But if I don’t ask for the shutdown, this one student could face serious harm—or even end up in the hospital. I keep replaying her face struggling to breathe versus the groans and frustration that will come from twenty-nine other kids in the stifling heat. I don’t want to be responsible either way. What would YOU do?
