I live in an older apartment complex where the heat is central and controlled through the main building’s circuit panel in the basement. Last night, during a heavy snowstorm, I discovered my elderly neighbor had passed out in her apartment from carbon monoxide poisoning—her old gas heater malfunctioned. I managed to drag her out and call emergency services. After the paramedics left, I realized that unless I cut power to the building—temporarily shutting off everyone’s heat—the problem could happen in any unit and go unnoticed overnight. None of us have carbon monoxide detectors because management never installed them, despite our repeated requests. If I shut off the main power and heat, families with kids, sick residents, and a new mom with a week-old baby will be cold all night in below-freezing temperatures.
