Should I Cut Power to Save One, Even If Hundreds Suffer?

Category: ethics • Theme: Individual Welfare vs Collective Comfort

I work as a building superintendent for a big apartment complex. Last week, during a heatwave, the fire alarms kept going off due to a resident who uses an oxygen machine that kept overheating. The maintenance team discovered her room’s old circuit - powering both her machine and the overworked AC for her whole floor - was dangerously close to starting a fire. The only immediate fix was to shut off AC to her floor for several days while we rewired, meaning nearly 100 residents would be forced to suffer in stifling heat. But if we didn’t, we risked a fire starting in her apartment—the very place meant to keep her alive. Management wanted to delay the fix, worried about complaints and lawsuits from tenants if their comfort was disrupted. But I kept thinking about this woman—the fear in her eyes, her absolute dependence on the oxygen machine, and how vulnerable she was. At the same time, the elderly, kids, and people working from home on her floor count on that AC, and with the temperatures soaring, it’s more than just comfort—it’s about health. Do I force the fix and risk an uproar from angry tenants, or do I wait, hoping nothing terrible happens? The pressure from both sides is crushing me, and I feel like I’m being forced to choose who truly matters. What would YOU do?
