I’m torn apart right now. One of my closest friends recently confided in me that he’s HIV positive. He works at a local tattoo shop, a place a lot of our small town frequents. He swore me to secrecy—he’s terrified of the stigma, and losing his job would devastate him. But last week, I overheard a group mentioning some less-than-strict hygiene at the shop. I don’t believe he’d ever put anyone at risk on purpose, and I also know that just having HIV doesn’t make him a danger if he’s careful. But what if he messes up, or someone finds out, and it comes back to me that I knew? Just thinking about someone getting sick makes my stomach twist. At the same time, I grew up here—I know how cruel people can be. If his diagnosis comes out, he’ll lose everything: his livelihood, maybe his friends, his reputation. It’s not fair for the whole town to shun him, especially when with proper precautions, there’s no danger. I haven’t slept well in days, running through what’s right and what’s wrong. If I keep quiet, am I betraying everyone else? If I speak up, am I betraying him? The weight is suffocating. I wish someone else could just tell me what to do. What would YOU do?
