I recently began volunteering with a small charity that my long-time friend runs. I was excited to contribute to something good, and it felt rewarding to see the difference our work made. But over the past few months, I’ve noticed little things that don’t add up: receipts missing from reports, vague responses when I ask about certain expenses, and several large donations from fundraising drives that weren't reflected in any of our projects. Last week, I was left alone in the office and couldn’t help but look through some files—I found proof that a significant amount of money has been redirected to personal accounts connected to my friend. I feel sick. If I go to the board or authorities, I risk both my friend’s reputation and possibly her entire livelihood. Our social circle is tight; word will get around fast, and the fallout could be huge for everyone involved. But if I keep quiet, I’m complicit in stealing from people who gave their money believing it would help those in need. My friend has always been there for me in hard times, which makes this even harder. I want to believe there’s a good explanation, but the evidence seems clear. I keep lying awake at night, running through the consequences: the betrayal, the gossip, the possibility that the charity itself could be shut down, and—most of all—the idea that the people we’re supposed to be helping are being let down.
