Should I Expose My Neighbor’s Hit-and-Run and Ruin Her Family?

Category: ethics • Theme: Justice vs Compassion

I witnessed my next-door neighbor’s car hit a cyclist while I was out for an early evening walk. By the time I ran over, the car had sped off, but I recognized the vehicle and later saw a fresh dent in the same spot. Nobody has come forward yet, and the local news says the cyclist is recovering but in serious condition. The thing is, my neighbor is a single mom with two young kids. She and I aren’t close, but I know how hard she works and how much her family depends on her. If I go to the police, her whole life could unravel—her job, custody of her kids, everything. But if I stay silent, I keep thinking about the person who got hurt and the fact that no one is being held accountable. My conscience is tearing me apart. Every morning, I see her driving her kids to school—then I see the cyclist’s face in my mind, and I feel sick. I keep replaying the moment in my head, wondering if I really have the right to decide what happens to their lives. What would YOU do?
