I never thought I’d find myself in a situation like this. Last week, I was coming home late after a work dinner when I saw a car speed away after hitting a cyclist at the intersection near my house. It was dark, but I recognized the car — my neighbor’s distinctive old sedan, the one her teenage son drives. The cyclist survived but is in the hospital with serious injuries. I haven’t told anyone what I saw, but it’s eating me up inside. The boy’s family has already been through so much this year — his father lost his job, his little sister is battling an illness, and honestly, that kid has always seemed kind and a bit lost. During the police investigation, his family even came over to ask if I’d seen anything, and the mother looked so desperate and scared. She said things like 'we just can’t take anything else right now.' I keep picturing the injured cyclist’s face, wondering if justice will really be served if the truth stays hidden. But outing this boy would likely ruin his future, devastate a family already on the edge, and make me the reason their lives spiral further. At the same time, silence feels like complicity, and I’m not sure I could live with that either.
