I’ve volunteered with a local charity for the past three years, and I’ve genuinely loved the work we do—running food drives, helping families, and organizing events. I’ve built friendships there, and some of the stories of hope from people we’ve helped have honestly brought me to tears. But a few weeks ago, while helping reconcile an invoice, I found suspicious payments to what looked like private accounts, and weirdly high 'admin expenses.' I started quietly digging. Yesterday, one of my coworkers—who trusts me—confided that the director’s cousin gets paid as a ‘consultant’ for doing almost nothing, while some donations have been used for personal expenses. If I speak up, I could end up destroying an organization that, despite these issues, still helps a lot of people. I might be risking jobs—including my own—and ruining the reputation of people I care about. But hiding this feels like betraying everyone who gives their money in good faith. I haven’t slept well since finding out. Every time I see a donor or a family we’re supposed to help, I feel sick and fake. I want to do the right thing, but I genuinely don’t know what that is.
