I work part-time for a mid-sized charity focused on supporting underprivileged children. When I joined, I truly believed in everything we stood for and even convinced friends to donate. Lately, though, I accidentally saw some internal reports while helping with data entry. It looks like a large chunk of donations—sometimes more than half—goes into a vague 'administrative fees' category instead of the children’s programs. I asked my supervisor, and she laughed it off, saying it’s ‘industry standard’ and to leave things to the directors. Still, I overheard her planning a luxury retreat with donor funds. Part of me feels sick that donors, including people I care about, are being misled. But another part of me worries what would happen if the charity got exposed: tons of people might lose help and the small team (most of them just as naïve as I was) could lose their jobs. And if I go public or report this, I risk being blackballed in the nonprofit world, losing friends, and maybe even legal trouble if I use confidential info.
