I volunteer for a small charity that supports local families in crisis. Over the past few months, donors have given generously—some of them are even my own friends. Recently, as part of my volunteer work, I’ve been handling invoices and saw something I can’t forget: thousands of dollars have been spent on things like designer furniture, expensive espresso machines, and decor for the office. The recipients the charity is supposed to help, meanwhile, are still waiting for basic supplies. I tried bringing it up quietly with one of the staff, but was brushed off and told, “A professional office helps us do our best work!” I feel sick when I think about how people are giving money expecting it to help those in need, not to create a luxury office many of them could never dream of. But the charity is truly a lifeline for some families, and its reputation in our town is everything. If I speak up—internally or publicly—I could destroy what good the charity does, make many people feel betrayed, and lose friends who volunteer here too. If I stay quiet, I feel complicit and ashamed, like I’m helping to cover up something really wrong. I also worry nobody else will notice, and nothing will change.
