Should I Return the Wallet to Its Wealthy Owner?

Category: ethics • Theme: Personal Need vs Moral Responsibility

I found a wallet on the sidewalk last week, right outside an upscale restaurant. When I opened it to check for ID, I saw thick stacks of bills—probably the most cash I've ever held at once, plus credit cards and a business card with the owner's name. After some quick searching online, I realized the owner is a local real estate developer, someone with more money than I could ever dream of. Meanwhile, my rent is overdue, I've been rationing groceries, and the stress has been eating at me for months. Part of me felt like fate had finally handed me a lifeline, even though I knew it wasn’t mine. I walked past luxury cars and vibrant storefronts while holding the wallet, feeling the weight of possibility, but also fear. I imagined the owner barely noticing the loss, compared to the huge difference this cash would make in my life—covering bills, buying food, maybe even a little breathing room. But I also kept picturing how I’d feel if someone took my last dollars when I was desperate. Returning it would mean giving up desperately needed money, but I keep thinking about honesty and karma—and whether I could live with myself if I kept it. Another part of me wondered: what if I just mailed the wallet back anonymously, keeping the cash but sending the cards and ID? No one would ever know, but I would. I’m torn between my struggles and my values, and every day I wait, the decision gets heavier. What would YOU do?
