I never imagined a late grocery run would put me here. I was walking back to my car when I saw a van speed out of a parking space, hitting a cyclist and darting away. I knelt with the cyclist until help came, shaken but grateful he’d survive. I’d gotten a blurry glimpse of the driver – not enough for police. But days later, I recognized the van and the face: it was my son’s beloved elementary school teacher, picking up his daughter. She’s a single parent, adored in our community, always volunteering and lifting others up. She looked so tired, so overwhelmed. I can’t be completely sure it was her—my memory is shaky, but the circumstances all match. If I went to the police and shared my suspicion, even just the investigation could destroy her reputation, her job, her child’s sense of stability, maybe even risk her custody. But if I stay silent, the cyclist never gets closure, and she never takes responsibility, however accidental it was. I keep imagining if roles were reversed—what if it were my son who was hit? Yet the thought of shattering this woman’s life over something that may have been a lapse, not malice, makes me feel sick. I don’t know how to weigh one person’s justice against another’s survival. What would YOU do?
