I just found out my close friend is planning to propose to his girlfriend tonight. He’s been dreaming about this and even showed me the ring last week. But earlier today, completely by accident, I saw a text on her phone while we were sitting together at coffee. She was messaging another guy, and the conversation made it painfully clear she’s been having doubts—she even hinted she might end things soon. My friend has no clue and is going all out: a fancy dinner, family waiting, the works. I’ve been agonizing for hours. If I tell him what I saw, I could ruin his big night and maybe his relationship—but if I stay silent, he could be left heartbroken and humiliated in front of everyone. Worse, I might ruin our friendship if he thinks I’m meddling or, later, if he feels I failed to warn him. I keep replaying the look on his face when he told me how much he loves her.
