I’m struggling with whether to intervene in my closest friend’s biggest decision. For months she’s planned to move halfway across the country for a job she found online. She’s been so excited—talking about starting fresh, finally leaving her comfort zone, how this was the opportunity she’d dreamed of. Yesterday, in a random conversation with a coworker, I learned that the company she’s about to join has been embroiled in a massive legal scandal and will likely shut down in a matter of weeks. I double-checked online and found quiet news articles that confirmed it. My friend’s not super savvy with this kind of thing—she trusts easily, sometimes to a fault. But she loathes when people try to “rescue” her or question her life decisions. She’s adamant that she wants to pave her own way without interference, especially after her last relationship ended with her boyfriend controlling every step. I feel terrified imagining her giving up everything, moving, and ending up jobless—maybe stuck in a city where she knows no one. But I keep imagining her angry at me for butting in, or even refusing to believe me. What if she thinks I’m jealous or trying to hold her back? Still, I’m not sure I could live with myself seeing her hurt when I could have said something. I can’t decide which would be the bigger betrayal: not warning her, or not respecting her independence. What would YOU do?
