I’m stuck in a situation I never wanted. My close friend called me, thrilled about her engagement, and asked me to dinner to celebrate. When I arrived, I was surprised to see her fiancé—because I recognized him as someone who’d worked at my old job under a completely different name. Back then, rumors swirled about his abrupt exit after allegations of stealing large amounts of money. Nothing was ever proven, but the stories were loud enough that it cast a shadow over everyone. At dinner, he acted like he’d never met me. My friend was glowing, so happy and trusting, asking if I’d heard anything about his old jobs since he said he left for “personal growth.” I left dinner feeling sick.
