Should I Warn My Friend Her Investment Is a Scam?

Category: ethics • Theme: Friendship Duty vs Respecting Autonomy

I’ve been watching my close friend get really excited about a new investment opportunity she found online. She’s been telling everyone how it’s going to change her financial situation and finally help her pay off her debts. The thing is, I recognized the company from a news report a few months back—it’s apparently been flagged by several watchdog groups for fraudulent activity. My friend, though, has always been cautious and stubborn; she even told me once that she doesn’t want ‘negativity’ from others when she’s finally feeling hopeful. Now she’s about to transfer a sizable amount of her savings tomorrow, and I’m torn. If I say something, she might push me away or even blame me if I’m wrong. If I say nothing and she loses her money, I’ll feel like I failed her. The thought of her losing everything makes me sick, but I also know she values her independence and hates people interfering. I’ve been pacing all night, rehearsing what to say, weighing if I should show her the evidence or keep quiet and let her make her own choice. I love her and don’t want to damage our friendship or her sense of agency. I can’t shake the feeling of responsibility, but I truly don’t know what’s right. What would YOU do?
