I never imagined I’d be in this position, but over the past year, I’ve watched my older brother fall apart. He’s been drinking heavily since his divorce—at first just on weekends, but now I get calls from his kids saying he never gets out of bed, and our mom has found empty bottles stuffed everywhere. The family is split. My parents grew up in a culture where you don’t air dirty laundry, but my sister says if I don’t step in, something terrible could happen. They all seem to think I’m the only one he might actually listen to. I feel this pressure mounting every time the group chat blows up with another round of worry and veiled accusations. But honestly, I don’t know what to do. My brother and I have always been close, and I know he’s ashamed—he barely returns my texts now. Part of me wants to march over and force him to see what he’s doing to his kids, but then there’s this scared part that dreads pushing him even further away. I’ve got my own family and job, and I’m already stretched thin emotionally. Sometimes I wonder—is it my place to play savior? Or am I just making excuses to avoid awkward pain? I stay up at night imagining the worst if I do nothing: his health, his kids… but also, if I push too hard and he cuts me out, then what? Is risking our relationship the right thing to do? What would YOU do?
