I always thought my parents’ marriage was rock solid—high school sweethearts, the whole story. But last month, while cleaning out the attic for my mom (she’s moving into a smaller place), I found a locked box tucked behind some insulation. Curiosity got the better of me. After some wrestling with an old bobby pin, the box popped open to reveal old passports, letters, and documents that showed my dad changed his name right before he met my mom—and there were divorce papers with another woman I’d never heard of. The letters hinted he had another child, who would be about my age. My dad died when I was just out of college, so I missed the chance to ask him directly. I’m at a crossroads. My mom is already overwhelmed by downsizing, grieving her old life, and possibly dealing with early memory issues. My siblings have never had a clue. Do I dig deeper, maybe track down this possible half-sibling, or share what I’ve found with my family? If I do, I risk shattering everything my mom and siblings believed about our family and my dad. If I keep it to myself, I’ll always wonder about a brother or sister out there, and I feel like I’m living a lie every time we talk about dad. Right now, every family gathering is tinged with this massive secret I’m carrying around. I just don’t know if opening old wounds is worth it, or if some things are better left buried. What would YOU do?
