My Husband Gave Away My Grandfather’s Watch

Category: family • Theme: Sentimental History vs Marital Understanding

I grew up treasuring my late grandfather’s old pocket watch. He used to wind it every Sunday, and after he passed, my mom gave it to me as a keepsake. For years, it’s sat in our family room in a small wooden box—something I always intended to pass down to my son one day. Last weekend, I noticed the box was empty. After searching everywhere and starting to panic, I asked my husband if he’d seen it. He looked at me guiltily and admitted he’d given it to his cousin at a family barbecue. Apparently, his cousin collects vintage watches and had admired it, so my husband just handed it to him on the spot, thinking it wasn’t being used and that it would make his cousin happy. He was genuinely shocked by my reaction and said he didn’t realize how important it was to me. I felt betrayed, heartbroken, and honestly so angry I could hardly speak. Now his cousin has it, and my husband says asking for it back would be mortifying and create a lot of tension in the family. But every time I think about the empty box, I get teary. I don’t want to damage family relationships or humiliate my husband, but losing that watch feels like losing my grandfather all over again. Should I demand we get it back? Try to make peace with it being gone? Or find some other way to process what happened? What would YOU do?
