My Husband Gave Away My Grandfather’s Watch—Do I Ask for It Back?

Category: family • Theme: Sentimental Attachment vs Marital Harmony

I still can’t believe it happened. My grandfather’s pocket watch was one of the few things I had left from him—a small, brass timepiece he’d carried through two wars and always showed me when I was little. He’d let me wind it up, telling stories I cherished. Last month, my husband’s old friend came to visit with his teenage son, who just started vintage watch collecting. I was out running errands. When I got back, my husband told me he’d given the watch as a ‘special gift’ because the boy was so fascinated and would value it. I was stunned—he meant well, but he didn’t even check with me. I tried so hard to hide how upset I was, but I feel like a part of my family history is just… gone. My husband didn’t realize how important it was. Part of me wants to call his friend and explain, maybe ask for the watch back. But I know it would be awkward and my husband would feel hurt, maybe humiliated. Another part of me thinks I should just let it go, telling myself it’s only an object and not worth arguing over. But every time I remember my grandfather winding it, I tear up. I’m stuck between wanting to reclaim my history and not making this a bigger issue in my marriage—or embarrassing a kid who probably treasures the watch now. What would YOU do?
