My Mother-in-Law Begged Me to Hide Her Past From My Wife

Category: family • Theme: Honoring the Dying vs Honesty in Marriage

I’m writing this in the hospital waiting room. My mother-in-law has maybe days left. Yesterday, when my wife ran home to get her some things, my mother-in-law made a request I never saw coming. She grabbed my hand and told me, crying, that she’d once given up a baby for adoption, long before my wife was born. No one in the family knows except me now. She thinks telling my wife will only cause pain—my wife is already breaking under the strain of losing her mom. But she also begged me not to let her secret die with her, and to pass along a letter she wrote if I ever feel the time is right. My wife is closer to her mom than anyone. I can’t stop thinking about what my mother-in-law carried all her life, and how much my wife values honesty—not just from family, but from me. Would knowing the truth, years from now, give my wife answers or just more grief? If I keep this secret, I feel like I’m betraying my marriage. But if I share it right away, I go against her mother’s dying wish. The pressure is unbearable. I don’t know whether protecting my wife from hurt means shielding her or trusting her with the truth. I just want to do right by both of them—but it feels impossible. What would YOU do?
