I never thought I'd be in this kind of situation. Last weekend, I noticed my grandfather’s old watch missing from the top drawer where I always keep it. That watch isn’t worth much to anyone but me—it was given to me on my wedding day, and it’s one of the only things I have left of him. When I asked my spouse if they’d seen it, they told me—almost offhandedly—that they’d given it to my nephew. Apparently, my nephew has started collecting watches, and my spouse thought it would be a sweet gesture to encourage his new hobby. They had no idea how much that watch meant to me. Honestly, I couldn’t even respond at first. It’s not that I don’t want my nephew to have things, but I felt like a piece of my own history was handed off without even a conversation. But now, if I ask for the watch back, I risk making my spouse feel terrible and possibly embarrassing my nephew, who would have no idea what’s going on. On the other hand, if I stay silent, I feel like I’m just swallowing my sadness and letting an important connection to my grandfather slip away. My spouse keeps asking why I’m acting distant, and I don’t know how to explain it without sounding petty or overdramatic. Part of me wants to just let it go and convince myself that memories don’t live in objects, but another part of me can’t help but feel ignored and hurt. I’m torn between speaking up for myself and keeping the peace in my family. What would YOU do?
